It is obvious to everyone that cotton has an important share not only in our country but also in the world. The importance of cotton in the development of the light industry in the world has long been known.

Based on the findings of archaeologists, we know that 3,000 years ago, cotton was grown in India and woven from its pulp. Greek historians Herodotus and Theophrastus conveyed this important information in more detail. The cotton fiber was often called "wood wool".

Cotton spread from China to Egypt 500 years before our era. The spread of cotton to Central Asia and Iran dates back to the IV-V centuries. In the IX-X centuries, there were high-quality fabrics from cotton fiber. In the Caucasus, the cultivation of cotton dates back to the XIII century. In the 18th century, the industrial processing of cotton fiber began. The cultivation of cotton in Iran and Arabia dates back to 6-7 centuries BC.

The history of cotton growing in Iraq dates back to ancient times. Noyova province in northern Iraq is one of the oldest inhabited places. It is estimated that 9,000 years ago there was developed agriculture in these lands.

The development of cotton in Asia is associated with the Watt Arabs. With the arrival of the Arabs in Asia, the cotton industry flourished. The Arabs also exported many types of cotton to the western Mediterranean. One of these species is the herbaseum species. This species spread from Sicily to Spain.

There is no exact written source about the first development of cotton growing in our country. If we look at various archival materials and references, we can see that there is no complete information about the state of cotton growing in Azerbaijan even before the beginning of the XIX century. A lot of information is incomplete. AA Sumbatzadeh revealed these archive materials. Again, according to historian Majei Khoreyskin, cotton was grown in Azerbaijan in the 4th and 6th centuries. It is believed that cotton growing in Azerbaijan came from Iran and Iraq. According to some reliable sources, the rapid cotton planting since 1823 took place mainly in the accidents near the railway (Ganja, Goychay, Agdash, etc.) and also in Nakhchivan.
